USA Cabinet Store’s Cary showroom has outlined how it plans and builds bathroom remodels within a home’s existing footprint, following the release of the 2026 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study on Sept. 30, 2026. The study of 1,619 homeowners found that most renovating households keep the room’s footprint and rework the layout inside it, most often to create a larger shower.
According to the Houzz findings, 82 percent of homeowners kept the same footprint during a recent or planned renovation, while 40 percent reworked the layout and 38 percent modified walls. Nearly half, at 49 percent, enlarged the shower, a figure up 10 points from prior findings. The study also reported that 26 percent removed a tub, and 79 percent of those households used the reclaimed space to enlarge the shower. Among all respondents, 89 percent hired at least one professional, most often a general contractor or a bathroom remodeling contractor.

The Cary showroom applies these findings to projects serving Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Apex, Morrisville, Holly Springs and surrounding communities in Wake, Durham, Orange and Chatham counties. The bathroom remodeling process begins with a 3D and VR design meeting, where homeowners decide whether to remove a tub and where to place an enlarged shower. Final measurements and planning follow, with plumbing and electrical confirmed before materials are ordered. One common example involves converting an unused tub alcove into a larger walk-in shower without moving exterior walls.
“The layout has to be settled before anyone picks up a demolition tool,” said a representative of USA Cabinet Store. “When the decision to remove a tub or relocate plumbing is made during the design phase, the rest of the bathroom remodeling process moves on schedule and homeowners avoid changes that add cost later.”
The company reports that most bathroom remodeling projects take four to eight weeks, with a simple vanity and fixture update running two to three weeks and a full renovation involving layout changes taking six to eight weeks. These are estimates that vary with project complexity, permitting and material availability.
A growing share of homeowners are also planning for the years ahead. The AARP 2024 Home and Community Preferences Survey found that 75 percent of adults 50 and older want to stay in their current home as long as possible, and 43 percent of older adults plan changes for future physical limitations. Of that group, 72 percent want bathroom upgrades such as grab bars and no-slip tile. The Houzz study found that wet rooms account for 18 percent of renovated bathrooms, with 40 percent of those homeowners citing accessibility or universal design. For these projects, the Cary showroom offers curbless walk-in showers and grab-bar blocking to support aging in place.
Founded in 2011, USA Cabinet Store operates a network of 13 showrooms across Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Texas, New Jersey, Florida and Tennessee. The company was listed among the National Kitchen and Bath Association’s 2026 Innovative Showroom Award winners in the Kitchen and Bath Design Centers category at KBIS 2026 and has received Best of Houzz Service awards in 10 separate years since 2016.
